Change Your View, Change Your Perspective

Today began with the anxiety that comes with the daunting task of preparing for an overseas trip being replaced by gratitude for a ridiculously amazing opportunity. Tears warmed my eyes when I woke up with my face pressed against the tiny airplane window and saw the view from 30k feet. I sat in awe of sun peaking its head over the horizon and highlighting the snow capped mountains of Northern Germany when the thought came to me: “Change your view, change your perspective.”

After landing in Barcelona, I was warmly greeted by Kenley, and our host family, whom she had already spent the previous 4 days with. Their immediate welcome and readiness to show us their homeland from an insiders perspective was all I needed to forget about the lack of sleep and cramped quarters I’d cussed during my 12 hr travel day.

We got everything settled in at the house, then the first place they took me to see was the Aiguafreda de Dalt, a monastery originally built in 875. Not 1875… 875. This ain’t Texas, y’all. 😉

Currently under construction, it has already been renovated several times due to a spring of “cold water” that runs through the mountain and under the structure, causing an unstable foundation. The haunting energy emitting from this place was enough to give the chills, but the sunset view from the top of its perch far surpassed any fear of being chased off by a previous tenant. More details in the pic captions.

Then we ventured a little further up the road to Centelles, a small town built around a medieval fortress. As we strolled the ancient streets we explored the many specialty shops filled with handmade breads and pastries, delicate chocolates, fresh fruit and veggies, and of course wine. A mass service was just ending in the church and they took me into the cathedral to see a massive pine tree hanging upside down inside the main hall. The tradition is called the celebration of the pines where the townspeople go into the local forest and harvest tree that is strung up along with apples and other decorations to represent prosperity.

It may only be 5pm CST time but this Texas girl is staring at midnight in Spain. I’m finally going to bed with a full heart, and tummy. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. 😍
