Renewing Hope

The tradition of Roscón de Reyes happens every year in Spain on the evening of January 5th. The three kings (from the Christ birth story) bring gifts to children who have behaved all year and coal to those who have not. The children write them letters telling all their good deeds and ask for special gifts to be delivered while they sleep. They leave a drink of choice and a sweet treat, and in some cases a carrot for their horses. No jolly round man in a red suit sneaking down your chimney here, but the story is somewhat familiar. The days building up to the event are filled with many festivities, including live nativities, opportunities for the children to meet the kings in person, and culminating with a very ceremonious parade where the kings are presented with a special key by the city council that will open all of the doors to the children’s homes in town. There are continuous celebrations for days.

Many years ago, I lost the desire to celebrate the holidays. My dad had passed away and I separated from my husband of 13 years. The family dynamic seemed to dissipate and my kids were getting older, leaving a gap in the desire to continue traditions. The Christmas spirit left me with the rest of the season’s familiar customs that had gone astray.

But tonight something stirred in me. Maybe it was the excitement from the hoards of hopeful children scrambling for scattered parade candy, maybe it was the letter I wrote to Los Tres Reyes proclaiming my desires for 2025, or maybe it was the amazingly kind and gracious family that chose to share their holiday and culture traditions with us. Whatever it was, a renewed sense of hope entered my presence.

It’s part of a bigger shift that has been happening recently where my perspective of life experiences that were originally thought to be negative have come to light as great learning experiences, instead. Change your view, change your perspective seems to be a common theme these days.
